If you want more information just reach out and contact us. We love to talk numismatics. At premium quality coin we want you to be happy with every coin you purchase. We use a critical eye when determining the price of all our coins. If you see that a coin has been “net” graded be advised we believe that there is something that might keep the coin from grading at either PCGS or NGC. We are not certain about this since all of the coins we submit to the services are requested to be put into a holder with details grading on the slab. Our “net” grade takes into account many factors like eye appeal, the degree of problems, acceptance in the market place and overall value. Our “net” price is the price we feel the coin should command considering everything that might be technically wrong with the specimen. We have given considerable thought to our pricing and hope that you will decide it meets all the requirements of a fair deal. We will consider offers but please understand we are a full service firm with over 30 years in the business and we are not desperate for money. The new denomination was created as a direct result of the discovery of gold in California and the ensuing California Gold Rush. The Liberty Double Eagles would be produced from 1849 to 1907 across five different mint facilities with mintages ranging from the hundreds to the millions. The first year of issue for the series has only a single example known to exist. The remainder of the series includes several other issues which are extremely rare or unknown in mint state grades and three issues struck in proof-only format. On January 24, 1848, gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill in Coloma, California on the bank of the American River. Although the owner John Sutter tried to keep the discovery a secret, word quickly spread and set off the California Gold Rush. Between 1848 and 1855, approximately 300,000 people would come to the area to seek their fortune. The massive movement of people and the influx of gold into the monetary supply would have far-reaching societal and economic impacts. Changes would also occur within the United States coinage system.Under the Coinage Act of 1792, the original United States gold denominations consisted of the quarter eagle, half eagle, and eagle, with values of two dollars and fifty cents, five dollars, and ten dollars, respectively. With the vast quantity of gold coming out of California, additional options were deemed necessary to convert the bullion into coins. The Coinage Act of 1849 would authorize the gold dollar and the double eagle, creating a new lowest and highest denomination for gold coinage. United States Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre would be responsible for designing both of the new coins.Obverse DesignThe obverse of the Liberty Double Eagle features a profile portrait of Liberty, facing left. Her hair is bound with tresses falling behind her neck and she wears a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. There are thirteen stars surrounding the portrait with the date appearing below. Except for a few minuscule improvements to the working hub, the obverse design would essentially remain unchanged for the duration of the series.Reverse DesignThe reverse design features a rendition of the heraldic eagle with large scrolls to each side containing the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. A semi-circle of rays extends from wing to wing of the eagle with an oval circle of stars just below. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination expressed as “TWENTY D.” appear surrounding. During the course of the series, the reverse design underwent two notable modifications. In 1866, the reverse was altered to add the motto IN GOD WE TRUST within the oval of stars. In 1877, the denomination was modified to read TWENTY DOLLARS in full rather than the abbreviated version. However, the actual item you will receive is guaranteed to be similar to that shown and exactly as described.About Saint-Gaudens Double EaglesThe Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is widely considered to feature the most beautiful designs in the history of United States coinage. Created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the coins would be struck across three different mint facilities from 1907 until the recall of federal gold in 1933. During the first year of the series, a small number of patterns would be struck in ultra high relief, followed by limited production for circulation in high relief, and finally mass production in modified lower relief. The series includes a number of extremely rare issues, which were created due to the impact of mass meltings following the recall of gold coinage. The design of the series was the result of a historic collaboration between President Theodore Roosevelt and sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The president had expressed disapproval of the current circulating coin designs, all of which had been in use for more than half a century. He wanted America’s coins to be objects of beauty and expressions of national identity. He chose America’s most renown sculptor for the task of redesigning all United States circulating denominations. Ultimately, Saint-Gaudens was only able to redesign the double eagle and eagle before his death in 1907.Letters exchanged between Roosevelt and Saint-Gaudens also reveal the role which the President played in the creation of the new coin design. One of Roosevelt’s ideas was to strike the coins in high relief, referring to the extent that the sculpted images of the coin project outward. He further suggested raising the rim in order to protect the surfaces of the coin. In the ensuing months, models were prepared and further improvements were made to the original design. It was also determined that the date would be featured in Roman numerals, which would be a first on American coinage. Many of these ideas were strongly rejected by Mint officials, in particular by Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber Throughout this period, Saint-Gaudens was struggling through cancer and his condition was worsening. Before he passed away, a small number of patterns were struck in ultra high relief. This represented the original design as intended by Saint-Gaudens, however the coins proved impractical to produce. Following Saint Gaudens’s death, an alternate set of dies were put into production featuring the design in high relief, although this design also proved challenging to produce. Charles E. Barber prepared a final set of lower relief dies, which would be used for mass production Obverse DesignThe obverse features a full figure of Liberty, striding confidently forward. In one hand she holds a lit torch and in the other an olive branch. The Capitol dome can be seen in the far background and rays of the rising sun fill the fields. There are 46 stars surrounding, representing the number of states in the Union at the time. The word LIBERTY appears above. The date, which appears at lower right, was first expressed in Roman Numerals to present a classical look, but later changed to Arabic Numerals. The designer’s monogram “ASG” appears beneath the date.Reverse DesignThe reverse design features a bald eagle in flight. The sun appears below with its rays extending upwards into the fields. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS appear above. During 1908, the design was modified to add the motto IN GOD WE TRUST between the sun and its rays. The edge of the coin carries the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM with stars placed between each of the words. However, the actual item you will receive is guaranteed to be similar to that shown and exactly as described.About Liberty Head Double EaglesThe Liberty Double Eagle represented the first series for the twenty dollar gold denomination.
